How to choose image protection for your Shopify store

Most image-protection apps fall into three approaches, and only one helps after a photo is stolen. Six questions to evaluate any of them before you install.

Search the Shopify App Store for image protection and you get dozens of apps that sound similar. They are not. Underneath the marketing, almost all of them take one of three approaches, and the differences decide whether you are actually protected on the day an image is stolen. Here is how to tell them apart before you install.

The three approaches

  • Client-side blockers. Scripts that disable right-click, copy, drag, or claim to stop screenshots. They run only while a visitor is on your store.
  • Visible watermarks and logo stamps. A mark placed on top of the image that ships with any copy.
  • Invisible watermarking with proof. An identifying mark embedded in the pixels, plus detection and an ownership certificate for takedowns.

Each has a different answer to the questions below. We compare the whole field, grouped by approach, in the comparison hub.

Six questions to ask any app

1. Does it change how my customers see the photo? A visible watermark or logo sits on the image every shopper views, which can lower trust and conversion. Blockers and invisible watermarks leave the photo looking untouched. If the image is your sell, this matters a lot.

2. Does the protection stay with the image after it is copied? This is the big divide. A blocker acts only on your site, so once an image is saved or screenshotted, nothing about the copy ties it to you. A watermark, visible or invisible, travels with the copy. Anything that only works while a visitor is on your store cannot help you later.

3. Does it survive cropping, editing, and AI tools? A corner logo is cropped off in seconds, and free AI tools remove visible overlays in one click. A resilient invisible watermark is spread across the whole image and carries error correction, so a cropped or edited copy still matches. See logo stamps vs. invisible watermarks.

4. Can I find a stolen copy elsewhere? Protection is only half the job. Ask whether the app lets you detect your image on another site or listing, by URL or upload. Most do not. Without detection, you are relying on stumbling across theft by luck.

5. Does it produce proof of ownership for a takedown? When you report a stolen image, a host or marketplace acts on evidence, not your word. Ask whether the app generates a verifiable ownership record you can attach to a DMCA or marketplace complaint. This is the step almost every app skips, and the one that decides whether a takedown sticks.

6. What does it cost my customers and my store? Some blockers interfere with normal browsing and accessibility. Visible marks cost you a cleaner photo. Weigh the friction against what you actually gain, which for blockers, as covered in disable right-click and other lies, is very little.

Reading the answers

Run any app through those six questions and a pattern appears. Blockers fail questions 2 through 5. Visible watermarks pass 2 but fail 1, 3, and 5. The only approach that passes all six is an invisible watermark with detection and proof: the photo stays clean, the mark travels with every copy and survives editing, you can detect a copy anywhere, and a detection becomes a Chain of Proof certificate for a takedown.

That is the approach Tilkie is built on. If you use the six questions as your checklist, you will not just pick Tilkie, you will understand exactly why the cheaper-sounding options leave you exposed at the one moment that counts.
