How to add an invisible watermark to your Shopify images
A step-by-step guide to adding invisible watermarks to your Shopify product photos, so your images look unchanged but carry proof of ownership.
An invisible watermark adds proof of ownership to your product photos without changing how they look. On Shopify, you do not need any design work or technical setup to apply one. Here is the whole process with Tilkie, start to finish.
Before you start
It helps to understand what you are adding. An invisible watermark is an identifying code embedded across the pixels of an image. Shoppers see the photo exactly as before, but the file now carries a mark that ties it back to your store. Unlike a visible logo, there is nothing on the image to crop or remove, and unlike metadata, it is not stripped when the image is uploaded elsewhere.
Step 1: Install Tilkie
Add Tilkie from the Shopify App Store. It installs into your existing store with no theme changes and no code. There is a free plan, so you can protect a small catalog and try detection without paying.
Step 2: Choose what to protect
Open Tilkie and decide the scope:
- A single product, from its page, if you want to start with your best-selling or most-copied item.
- A collection, to protect a group in one pass.
- Your entire catalog, if you want full coverage right away. See how to protect your whole catalog at once.
Protection is non-destructive. Your original images are preserved, so you can revert at any time.
Step 3: Turn on Auto-Protect (optional)
If you add new products regularly, switch on Auto-Protect so every new image is watermarked automatically as it is added. This means your protection keeps up with your catalog without anyone remembering to run it. Auto-Protect is available on the Pro plan.
Step 4: Confirm the images look unchanged
Check a protected product on your storefront. The photo should look identical to before, at full quality, with no overlay or mark. That is expected: the watermark is invisible by design. Your customers get the same clean image they always did.
Step 5: Detect a copy when you need to
Adding the watermark is the protection. Detection is how you use it. If you find an image that looks like yours on another store, listing, or ad, paste the link or drop the file into Tilkie. In seconds you will know whether it carries your mark, even if the copy has been resized, cropped, or re-encoded.
Step 6: Generate proof for a takedown
When Tilkie confirms a match, generate a Chain of Proof certificate: a dated, verifiable ownership document with image hashes and a verification QR code. Attach it to a DMCA notice or a marketplace complaint to drive the takedown. The full enforcement path is in the DMCA takedown playbook.
That is the whole loop
Protect, detect, prove. Adding the invisible watermark takes a few clicks, the images stay exactly as your customers expect, and the proof is ready the day you need it. You can start free and protect your first products in minutes.
